Mixed success at local tournaments:

Our students participated in the Ashihara International Tournament held in Cape Town last month. Keenan Crowe and Justin Petersen showed a great improved on their Japanese showing with both of them ending up contesting an exiting final with Keenan Crowe emerging as the champion. Justin Petersen fitness might have let him down, but a well deserved 2nd place for him.

The Len Barnes Memorial tournament was held on the 7th October. We had strong participation former Kyokushin Union members from Zimbabwe, led by Sempai Samson Muripo. We hosted the Zimbabweans at our dojo and the team collectively came up trumps! Sempai Muripo won the under 80 kg division hands down, mainly as a result of waza-aries (half point), which was just as well as the judging and refereeing was atrocious! The contest was held under the auspices of the Royama group and only their referees were used, resulting in some bizarre and I am being generous; totally “erroneous” decisions. George Mutambu from Zimbabwe (twice represented Africa in Japan) arguably one of the most experienced international fighters was unceremoniously dumped by judges who did not known left from right, red from white, wazari from an ippon or what day it was. To travel almost 3000 km, only to be eliminated because of bias and incompetence is a travesty. The so called “Supreme Judge” had no control over the judging, the sad part was that experienced international judges were sitting on the side twiddling their thumbs. Justin Petersen suffered a similar fate, thus no wonder that the spectators vent their feelings deafeningly whilst the crowd’s emotions run high. There is no place in karate for arrogance, ego and offensiveness, certainly not from shihans who suppose to set an example.

Results Bushido Day:

On Sunday 16th September we had our most successful Bushido day yet Thank you to all of you who made this possible.

5 years and under: This division was hotly contested by the “PeeWee’s”, with a gold medal for Samuel Finder, silver Gabriel Winterstein and bronze Dylon Greenwood and Mathew Koton.

6 years: This division had some “experienced” fighters as they all competed last time in the <5 division. However the new kids on the block took the honours with gold forMathew Abrahams, silverMarcus Jung with last years champion Adam Rawraway and BenjaminNeuburger getting bronze. Yes it gets tougher as youget older!

7 years: This division had the biggest entry, a total of 20 contestants competing for gold. 1st place was won byAvi Lurie the smallest but probably the bravest fighter in this group. Silver Alexander Korber with Aaron Sherman and Matheu Gomez sharing bronze.

8 years: This division had an outstanding result due to the fact thatMichaella Symons, won her 3rd gold medal in succession! Silver went to Moshe Jubilar and bronze was shared with Demi Caldis and ZubairWalele. Two girls in the top for! 9 years: This had some experienced fighters competing and the standard was very high. The final between Clifton Kaewkarn and Jason Smithwas a ding dong affair with Clifton winning his second gold medal and Jason again ending up with silver. Bronze was shared by Samuel Rosenberg and Brandon Levy.

10/11 years: This division as well as the <13 age group fought for the first time with head gear protection, as at this level competion becomes more serious with more contact allowed. The final was between Thamson Masat and a brave Tiana Schwab the only girl competing in this group. Gold ThamsonMasat, silver Tiana Schwab with bronze Arman Tavakoli and Kyle Leaver.

12/13 years: This was hotly contested with the Klass twins, Adam and Jake dominating the proceedings. Both ended up in the final and it was decided that we would present a gold medal to both, much to the relief of their momTracy. They were having their Bar-Mitzvah soon! Silver went to Jaques Bagraim and bronze to Steven Korber. Picture  Picture karate 066  (heading)

Shihan Bas conducted a black belt grading, training seminar as well a referee seminar. The Zimbabwe Kyokushin Union members are the biggest karate force in Zimbawe and no doubt will produce a strong contingent for the World Cup to be held in Okinawa in January 2008
