Kyokushin Karate “The Strongest Karate” was founded by Sosai Masutatsu Oyama. Sosai Oyama studied various martial arts with masters like Gichin Funakoshi of Okinawan fame (Shotokan karate) and So Nei Chu of Goju karate. Taking what he felt were the best techniques and concepts from other karate styles, he created Kyokushin karate.
In 1953 he opened his first “Dojo” in Tokyo and in 1956 Kyokushin Karate was officially born in the Oyama Dojo near the Rikkyo University, Tokyo. By the late 1960’s Kyokushin had spread to over 123 countries and by the 1970’s an estimated 20 million karate-ka world wide were practising Kyokushin Karate.
In South Africa Kyokushin Karate was the first official karate style, established by Shihan Len Barnes in 1956. The Kyokushin Karate Honbu in Greenpoint is a member of KAWP and KSA
