Karate for children entails more than training the body for fighting and self defence purposes. For children, karate is an essential tool in creating empowerment, co-ordination, self-esteem, confidence and counters bullying, something which seemingly seems to be on the increase.

Children are taught basic life skills in a disciplined, but fun environment.

“The formal structure of the karate Dojo, with it emphasis on respect and courtesy, helps to install an increasing sense of discipline and self-discipline in children. It increases self-esteem and in girls a sense of empowerment and confidence.” Quote Mr Terry Dowdall past director of the University of Cape Town Child Guidance Clinic.

Shihan Bas believes in starting kids young. Children (boys and girls) commence classes as young as age 4. There are daily classes at the Greenpoint Dojo (club). All children are taught at the Dojo and not at schools as Shihan Bas believes that the formal environment of his Dojo creates a better discipline, resulting in greater pride and respect for one self.

No special clothing is required initially, but the formal Dogi, a white karate suit, gives one a sense of identity. Kids do regular gradings (tests) and acquire different colour belts as they progress to the next level.

With 40 years of karate experience, Shihan Bas is ultimately qualified to teach kids their first steps on to a path that will empower them. Girls specifically will benefit, increasing their self-esteem and confidence.
