The Cape Town Kyokushin Karate Club was started in 1995 by Shihan Bas van Stenis as a result of his disenchantment with the prevailing Kyokushin senseis of the time, who after the death of Sosai Masutatsu Oyama very much went on their own way and neglected their teacher Shihan Len Barnes. Shihan Len Barnes was actively involved in Shihan Bas’s dojo and up to his death in 2003 at the age of 84 was an integral part of the Cape Town Kyokushin Karate Club.
Extensive renovations were done in 2004 and the dojo, which is a full time martial arts school, is now home to a large number of successful senseis and sempais. The dojo has created a number of junior champions over the last few years which bode well for the future of Kyokushin Karate in South Africa.
The Cape Town Kyokushin Karate Club is a member of the All Japan Kyokushin Union, Japan as well as a member of Karate Association Western Province (KAWP) and Karate South Africa (KSA)
